Family Services of Westchester Seeks Scarsdale Foster Families

Family Services of Westchester Seeks Scarsdale Foster Families

Family Services of Westchester Seeks Scarsdale Foster FamiliesFSW’s Therapeutic Foster Care program serves children of all social, economic and ethnic backgrounds.

Family Services of Westchester, which runs more than 50 social service and mental health programs, is seeking Westchester families for its Therapeutic Foster Care program, the group announced this week.

The program serves children of all social, economic and ethnic backgrounds who need “the support of loving, nurturing foster parents.” These children are considered special, and some may have behavioral, social or emotional problems.

“By giving a child the chance to grow up in a home and within a community, you can help this child learn how to function in society and how to care for themselves once they are old enough to do so,” said Dori Lewis, Homefinder and Clinician for FSW, in a statement. “There is no doubt that living in a foster home increases the child’s chance of success exponentially and FSW is there every step of the way to provide assistance.”

Below is FSW’s statement about its Therapeutic Foster Care program with information on who to contact with questions:

Westchester County is currently faced with a shortage of homes for foster care children with special needs and Family Services of Westchester (FSW) wants to partner with you so that every child can find a safe, caring, and supportive place to live. Our Therapeutic Foster Care program serves children of all social, economic and ethnic backgrounds. These youth are special – they may have behavioral, social, or emotional problems – but they need homes and the support of loving, nurturing foster parents. Importantly, FSW offers a wide-range of supports for those willing to open their homes, and hearts, to a child in need. These supports ensure that the foster parents who work with us have the tools they need to provide a safe, consistent and structured home environment where a child can develop skills to succeed in the home, school and community.

The shortage of foster homes in Westchester means that children in need are placed in situations far away from their home communities and/or in institutional settings. Neither of which is optimal for the child. “By giving a child the chance to grow up in a home and within a community, you can help this child learn how to function in society and how to care for themselves once they are old enough to do so,” remarks Dori Lewis, Homefinder and Clinician. “There is no doubt that living in a foster home increases the child’s chance of success exponentially and FSW is there every step of the way to provide assistance.” This includes specialized parent skills training; 24-hour support from our professional staff; weekly home visits by program staff; bi-weekly group support sessions; respite services; and tax free monetary compensation.

Through counseling and the support of their foster parents, the children are encouraged to acquire better self-control and improved social skills. Ultimately, our goal is to strengthen the relationship between birth parents and their children and to assist with reunification where possible or to prepare the child for independent living. “By becoming a foster parent, you have an opportunity to make a tremendous impact on the life of a child in need. You will also be amazed by the impact this will have on your own life,” says Ms. Lewis.

To learn more about FSW’s Therapeutic Foster Care program, please call Dori Lewis at 914-872-5278 or email her at Dlewis. Information sessions are held the first Thursday of every month in our office in White Plains, or you can make an appointment to suit your needs.

FSW was founded in 1954 and runs more than 50 social service and mental health programs for all ages, including Adoption, Head Start/Early Head Start, Adult and Youth Residences and Veterans Outreach and Support. Visit www.fsw.org for more information.

Scarsdale Students Can See Movie ‘Selma’ For Free

Scarsdale Students Can See Movie ‘Selma’ For Free

Scarsdale Students Can See Movie 'Selma' For Free

The #SelmaForStudents effort has come to Westchester County and starting Friday, Jan. 16 and continuing through Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 19, seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students can see the movie Selma for free.

The limited, free admission program is being led by a team of African-American business leaders in New York, with organizations across the U.S. coordinating a massive national campaign to find African-American business leaders to underwrite free admission to the film Selma for students around the country, according to SelmaStudentTickets.com. See the film’s trailer below.

Because of the success in New York City where 27,000 students saw the movie, dozens of cities across the country have been added to the program. In next door Connecticut for example, donors helped about 8,000 students around the state receive free admission, according to an announcement from Stamford Public Schools.

Students need to show a school ID card or their report card for free admission, according to SelmaStudentTickets.com. Tickets are available while the supply lasts.

The program was expanded with generous donations from many of the country’s most prominent African-American business leaders, to allow more than 275,000 students nationwide to see the award-winning movie starring David Oyelowo, Oprah Winfrey and Carmen Ejogo.

Here are participating theaters in Westchester County, according to #SelmaForStudents:

  • City Center 15: Cinema de Lux in White Plains
  • Regal New Roc Stadium 18 in New Rochelle
  • Showcase Cinema de Lux Ridge Hill in Yonkers

Scarsdale Residents: Remember to Recycle Electronics

Scarsdale Residents: Remember to Recycle Electronics

Enjoy that new cell phone, TV or tablet but don’t forget to dispose of the old one properly.

Scarsdale Residents: Remember to Recycle Electronic

Did you get that new laptop, game or gadget you wanted?

The arrival of new electronics in your life is usually accompanied by the familiar “What do I do with the old version?” dilemma.

Give the environment a present this holiday season and dispose of it properly. Don’t know how? Well, as of Jan. 1 the rules change.

Here are the details from the DEC:

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reminds New Yorkers that as of January 1, 2015, the NYS Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act prohibits certain types of electronic waste from being placed in the trash, or at the curbside for trash pickup.

Citing the potential for environmental harm from improperly disposing electronics, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens urges New Yorkers to properly recycle their unwanted computers, televisions and other electronics through the many free or low-cost options currently available.

“Incinerating electronic waste or disposing of it in a landfill can potentially put hazardous materials into the air and soil,” Martens said. “New York State law requires manufacturers to provide recycling of electronic waste for consumers. Recycling electronics is one of the greatest gifts New Yorkers can give to the environment.”

Consumers can learn how to easily recycle electronic waste, as well as which electronic equipment can be recycled for free in New York State at the DEC website, http://bit.ly/NYewaste.

On DEC’s electronics recycling web page, consumers will find the manufacturer’s brand of equipment they wish to recycle, as well as a link to the manufacturer’s recycling program webpage and a toll-free number for information about electronicsrecycling. DEC’s website also provides guidance for businesses, agencies and organizations on how to recycle electronics, regardless of the manufacturer.

Electronic equipment manufacturers who sell in New York State are required to accept for recycling or reuse their brand of equipment, as well as one piece of the same type of electronic waste of any manufacturer’s brand.

“When you buy a new television, both the manufacturer of your new television and the manufacturer of your old television are required to accept your old television for recycling,” Martens said. “It’s the best way to enjoy a new computer or television, easilyrecycle the old one, and know you are doing your part to protect the environment.”

Consumers eligible for free and convenient recycling include: households, for-profit businesses, corporations with fewer than 50 full-time employees, not-for-profit corporations with fewer than 75 full-time employees, not-for-profit corporations under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, schools and governmental entities located in New York State. For-profit businesses with 50 or more full-time employees and not-for-profit corporations with 75 or more fulltime employees, may be charged a recyclingfee, as well as any consumer who opts for a premium service.

Find recycling options and locations on DEC’s website at http://bit.ly/NYewaste.
